Montreal, or Montréal in French,[1] (pronounced in Canadian English, in European French, and in Quebec French) is the second-largest city in Canada and the largest city in the province of Quebec. Originally called Ville-Marie (" Literally 'City-Mary', translated 'Mary's City' or 'City of Mary'"), the city had come to be known as Montréal by the end of the 17th century, a name derived from the French Mont Royal ("Mount Royal"), the name of the three-head hill at the heart of the city.
